This Week's A List Highlights
10. "Queenless King" - WITCH
It's amazing to see such a unique group (so unique they pioneered their own sub-genre in Zambia in the 70s) come back with such strong material decades later. WITCH (We Intend To Cause Havoc) released their first song in 38 years in 2022 and they're not done with us yet.
Queenless King is the lead single from their upcoming album SOGOLO out 6/14 on Partisan Records. This is a timeless sounding funky groove and it has us excited to hear more!
"Walking Away From My Demons (Wet Leg Remix)" - Faux Real
Faux Real is the brothers duo of Elliott and Virgil Arndt and they released their debut album in 2024, featuring the track Walking Away From My Demons. It's a bright and indie-sleaze adjacent track that holds on entirely on its own. But, in Wet leg fashion, they've made this remix entirely their own. It's reminiscent of the Soulwax remix of Wet Leg's own Too Late Now. If you played this remix side by side with the original, I don't know if I could tell you they shared any elements and that's pretty impressive!
Faux Real become fast friends with Wet leg after opening up for them on their 2022 tour in the US. They were blown away by the confident club-ready version of their track and so were we! I would expect to see more Wet Leg on The A List in the coming weeks (next week if we're lucky) because they just dropped their new single "catch these fists" a few days ago!
"Babygirl" - The Black Keys
Is this the best The Black Keys song released in a while?! These Ohio boys have been extremely busy lately, having just released Ohio Players last year and now they have their 13th studio album No Rain, No Flowers coming later this year.
This is an extremely fun and funky track, and if this is any indication of what the new album is going to sound like, we're all ears. Is anyone else hearing a little Spoon influence on this one? You can catch them on tour starting 5/23. If you're in Durant, OK, you can catch previous A List act The Velveteers opening up on that first date!
I had to share this YouTube comment for the video that cracked me up: "Wow Lonely boy finally found his Baby girl 😂it’s brilliant ! Feels like summer ❤🎉"
"It's a Mirror" - Perfume Genius
It's no surprise that we're big Perfume Genius fans at Inhailer. We've been following them since before Inhailer was even started with their 2014 breakout album Too Bright and we've been big supporters of every album since. Their new record Glory that came out last week is bound to be just as much of a hit. We're loving the Americana tinged It's a Mirror.
They don't post there anymore (for obvious reason) but in the past, his Twitter (no, I'm not calling it the new name) was one of the only ones I would periodically check because it is genuinely one of the funniest accounts on there.
6. "Television" - KuleeAngee
It's great to see a new artist on the scene be received so well by the Inhailer team! We were big fans of their debut single "Animated Love" and their follow-up "Television" did not let us down. We're excited to see what else 2025 has for KuleeAngee.
We had a great conversation with them about "Television", check it out below!
Q: Can you tell us a little about how you came up with Television? What’s the track about?
A: So television was a really special one because it was the 4th tune we wrote. It was the first time we landed on a vocal style that really used both our voices to make something unique to us. With this one we really embraced the swagger and effortlessness of our sound and this has really become of a staple of the KuleeAngee groove.
Lyrically we touch on the kind of problems that get us in our own heads, but really it’s about screens being the root cause of us as people sedating ourselves just to get by. But there’s a lot of hope and euphoria in world if we can break away from it, even if just for a moment.
Q: I’m getting Damon Albarn/Gorillaz vibes on Television, mixed with some other contemporary acts like Jungle and Balthazar. What have been your influences for this project?
A: I think you’ve nailed it! Don’t know who Balthazar are but Jungle and Gorillaz definitely! We love both of them and they’ve been huge inspirations to us. We’re also big fans of Danger Mouse and Inflo as producers (who produced both these artists) and how they both have the knack to make timeless records.
Q: What’s the story behind the group name?
A: KuleeAngee is basically a middle name Keshav doesn’t have. He got told when he was a kid that he has this crazy long name which tuned out to not be true and is definitely too long to even spell out here. But in this, one of the middles name was “KuleeAngee”. And one day in coming up with band names that really stuck out to us.
"Orgiastic (Stereolab Cover)" -Bibi Club
We love a good cover! Especially one from an incredibly underrated duo out of Canada, Bibi Club. ESPECIALLY when it's a cover of the legendary Stereolab. We really love what they did here, bringing out some clarity of the original and adding some lush production.
This cover follows up their amazing 2024 record Feu du garde.
"I Come With Mud" - Men I Trust
Not only did we get one surprise Men I Trust album, we also have another one on the way later this year! In classic Men I Trust fashion, this is a dreamy and entrancing collection of songs. We seem them leaning more into an Americana/folk sound on the first track "I Come With Mud" and we never realized how much we needed this. The more slide guitar the better!
Equus Asinus is out now with Equus Caballus coming out later in the year.
"What I Wanna Hear" - Dirty Nice
I just found out that Dirty Nice is the project of Don't Hug Me I'm Scared's composer Charlie Pelling alongside Lisbon-based musician Mark Thompson and that makes me love them 1000 times more. Dirty Nice makes nothing but catchy bangers and their new single What I Wanna Hear is no different!
"Die For It" - My Morning Jacket
How can you not love Louisville long-standing Southern rockers My Morning Jacket? They just released their 10th studio album titled is a couple weeks ago and we really loved the second to last track on the album "Dir For It" this week. It's got a really classic sound, bouncing between chunky riffs and dreamy vocals.
is marks the first time that frontman Jim James hasn't produced or co-produced a My Morning Jacket album. This time handing the reigns to Brendan O’Brien, known for working with Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam.
"Pirouette" - Ain't
You ain't dreaming, there's a brand new song from London's Ain't! The sound of the 90s is still permeating the 2020's and we are obviously loving it. "Pirouette" is following up their only two other released songs so far from 2024. We could listen to that intro riff over and over again.
Ain't have been garnering much deserved buzz and we anticipate the hype to keep growing throughout the year. When are we going to get their debut record? We don't know, but it ain't now.
