November 2024 Artist of the Month: Porches

Porches, the brainchild of New York-based musician Aaron Maine, has been crafting evocative, synth-driven pop since its inception in 2010. Over the years, Porches has earned a reputation for its ability to blend introspective lyricism with bold, experimental sounds. With their latest release, Shirt—the project's sixth studio album—they delve deeper into themes of duality, desire, and the collision of dreams with reality.
Shirt is a fusion of chaotic impulses, insatiable yearning, and raw emotion—a sonic playground where the boundaries between one’s person and persona blur. As Maine crafts this anthemic exploration of intrinsic duality, the result feels at once familiar and uncanny, built on a foundation of crashing and caressing sounds.
Following the sonic energy of 2022’s All Day Gentle Hold !, Shirt emerges as Porches' heaviest album to date. Grungy guitars shimmer with a menacing edge, while drums and bass create a physical sense of tension and release that resonates through every track. Moments of eerie calm punctuate the chaos, offering a sense of emotional reprieve while highlighting the album’s visceral dynamics.
The album’s themes of ephemerality and identity are encapsulated in its poignant closing moments, where Maine reflects:
“All my life, all I've known, all it was was rock n roll. It was never meant to last and I think it's time to go, I pray to God the music takes me home.”
