“While I’m alive I’ll feel alive” is a recurring line across Why’s groundbreaking, genre-defying album Alopecia and the crowd for Alopecia’s 10-year anniversary show at The Woodward certainly was alive Friday night. The Cincinnati native group played the album cover to cover and did not disappoint fans. Supported by other local artist, experimental percussionist Ben Sloan and indie rockers Lala Lala, the show was one to remember. Lala Lala opened with their dreamy indie rock set. I was really impressed and will definitely be following their stuff a lot closer. Reminiscent of bands like Snail Mail and Slothrust.
Why? Started the show with this iconic first song from Alopecia, “The Vowels Pt. 2,” and announced they would be playing the album cover to cover to the roaring audience. Lead singer Yoni Wolf stood center stage playing to booming toms that are signature of the album. He was accompanied by the rest of Why? for the full set of their iconic album that was exactly what we all came for.
For me, the night exceeded my expectations. I saw some of my favorite songs played I thought I’d never see live, the highlights for me being“These Few Presidents” and “Simeon’s Dilemma.” It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see such a timeless album played live and I’m sure anyone in the audience would have to agree.
