Get ready, because AGAR is celebrating ten years of growth by throwing a Block Party this Friday! The 1200 block of Walnut Street will be shut down to accommodate performances from The Hood Internet, Pomegranates, PASSEPORT, and KNOTTS, as well as tunes from DJ HD.
You may be wondering what AGAR is. AGAR is a red substance used in a petri dish to grow cultures, which is exactly what the growth medium AGAR wants to do. Grow culture. Founded in 2008, the organization uses experiences, technology, music, and art to grow culture in communities. As we press on into the digital age, AGAR aims to connect people through experiences and technology.
Now a look at the bands:
The Hood Internet
The Hood Internet is a production duo out of Chicago that focuses on remixing and mashing up hip-hop tracks with indie rock. The duo formed in 2007 and consists of Aaron Brink and Steve Reidell. The Hood Internet has released two studio albums, three remix albums, an EP, and a series of mixtapes over the past 11 years. The duo has also produced records for BBU, Max B & Isaiah Toothtaker, Sole, and Kleenex Girl Wonder. The Hood Internet also runs a blog of the same name that they use as an outlet to release their music.
Pomegranates
Pomegranates is an indie rock band from right here in the Queen City. The band originally formed in 2006, but disbanded in 2013 after briefly changing its name to Healing Power. The band changed its name back to Pomegranates after reforming in 2015. Members have come and gone, but the current lineup consists of Joey Cook (vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards), Isaac Karns (vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards), Jacob Merritt (drums), and Pierce Geary (bass, keyboards, vocals). Pomegranates has released two EPs and five studio albums over the years, most recently the 2015 release of Healing Power.
PASSEPORT
PASSEPORT is another local band, but this one is relatively new to the scene. PASSEPORT is a female- fronted, four-piece, pop group that blends soft synthesizers with crisp guitar. The band released its debut single “Blood” last year and is featured on NGHTMRE’s “On the Run.” This up-and-coming band is definitely one to watch.
Knotts
Last, but not least we have KNOTTS from the Greater Cincinnati area. KNOTTS is the name under which Adalia Boehne creates her indie dream pop, folk, and rock songs. She describes herself as an energetic blend of Bjork, Spice Girls, and Gladys Knight and the Pips. KNOTTS released her first single “Until You” last year and dropped her debut album Is It Art Yet? this year.
