It was only a year ago that Josh Tillman released his third studio album Pure Comedy under the pseudonym Father John Misty. Now the ironic singer-songwriter has released two new songs in addition to “Mr. Tillman” off his upcoming album God’s Favorite Customer.
“Disappointing Diamonds Are the Rarest of Them All” is another witty performance from the king of sarcastic yet endearing love songs. The song delivers the signature west-coast pop sound which has become the standard for recent Father John Misty records.
Though the song gives listeners more of the same, what is there to complain about? Fans of FJM get it. “Like a pervert on a crowded bus / A glare of love bears down on us” his lyrics teeter on the edge of absurdity but that’s all part of the allure.
“Just Dumb Enough to Try” is a tender ballad about trying to maintain a failing relationship which exposes a more serious side of Father John Misty. The song stays away from the cynical and sarcastic tone of similar songs like “I Love You Honeybear” or “When You’re Smiling and Astride Me”. Its doleful lyrics and FJM’s dulcet vocals makes this song heartbreaking and beautiful.
The album is due to drop June 1, 2018, just in time for summer and the festival circuit. Be sure to catch Father John Misty this Saturday, April 28, at The National Homecoming Festival right here in Cincinnati.
