Hippo Campus: A DJ Favorite at the 20th Century Theater

Minnesota indie rockers Hippo Campus are making their way to the 20th Century Theater as part of their winter tour. They’ve performed at large events like SXSW, Summerfest, Bonnaroo, and even on Conan, and have opened for major acts like My Morning Jacket, Modest Mouse, and Cincy’s own Walk the Moon.

The four-piece met at Saint Paul’s Conservatory for Performing Arts. The then-highschoolers were originally in different bands: vocalist Jake Luppen and bassist Zach Sutton were in Blatant Youth, while guitarist Nathan Stocker and drummer Whistler Allen were in Northern. In 2013, they secretly came together to form Hippo Campus, and soon exploded into their local music scene thanks to local radio stations before being offered their first tour.

Hippo Campus has released two EPs, Bashful Creatures and South, and most recently, their first full length LP: Landmarks. All three are popular with both critics and everyday listeners, but live shows are where you'll see the band at peak performance. Jake says he believes it's "the thing that keeps people coming back." You'll hear the most high-energy and passionate versions of their songs live. They want you to have a good time and see that they are too.

The young age of the band members has been a point of focus for many articles about them, which is something they say has benefited them, as tired of it as they are. They say they don’t ever want to get comfortable with their growth as performers and writers because that’s when you stop growing.

Hippo Campus is a band to watch. Even with their accomplishments so far, we know they're just getting started. This is one INHAILER DJ favorite you won’t want to miss, so get your tickets before they sell out!
